Life on the Outer Banks, at least the Northern Outer Banks, is slowly returning to normal following the passage of Hurricane Irene. Fortunately, the areas along the ocean front and ocean side incurred minimal damage, mostly lost shingles, siding, and wet carpet from wind driven rain. The same cannot be said for sound side areas from Duck to South Nags Head, Colington Harbour and Manteo where significant flooding occurred. We continue to deal with the rolling power outages and cable outages from the flooding in South Nags Head.
Some guests have expressed concern over their inability to get through to our office and to obtain feed- back from our staff, for this I apologize. I am proud of the dedication and hard work put forth by our employees and in review of our response to the situation I am not sure what else could have been done. I do feel that Dare County made serious and potentially dangerous errors in allowing visitors on to the island so quickly without giving us at least a day to evaluate and inspect our properties. We simply were not afforded enough time to evaluate and prepare before we were overwhelmed with visitors.
As we move through the rest of this week and forward, I ask for your patience and understanding.
