Damages to NC 12 at S-Curves/Mirlo Beach restricts travel to Hatteras Island & Okracoke
North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue plans to tour portions of Dare County today and inspect damages sustained in last week’s coastal storm. The Governor will meet with local emergency and transportation officials. Perdue is also signing an emergency declaration to help Dare County recover and seek federal funds for the repairs needed on North Carolina Route 12.
NC Highway 12 remains closed to regular traffic north of Rodanthe. There is a sand travel route that is limtied to four wheel drive vehicles only in the Mirlo Beach area of Rodanthe. They are leaving this access route open for essential travel only and will be available for use until regular service is restored. Passage through this area is subject to the following restrictions – Only four wheel drive vehicles will be allowed to use the special route.
As of November 17th, 2009 there are ferries running to access Hatteras Island. A temporary ferry service is now operating between Rodanthe and Stumpy Point with priority given to emergency vehicles and service providers. A one-way trip will take about 2 to 3 hours. In Rodanthe the ferry service leaves at Myrna Peters Road by the community building. Rodanthe daily departures times are: 6:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m. 3:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. From Stumpy Point ferry service originates on US 264, approximately 1/2 mile west of the entrance to the village. Stumpy Point daily departures times are: 6:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Construction on Duck Road (NC 12) Starts Monday, October 26, 2009
Town of Duck,NC -- Visitors to the Town of Duck and the northern Outer Banks should take notice that construction on Duck Road will begin on Monday, October 26, 2009 and is projected to end by May 14, 2010. Consruction will be temporarily suspended during the week of Thanksgiving (November 20, 2009 - November 30, 2009), the Christmas and New Year?s Holiday weeks (December 18, 2009 - January 4, 2010), and during Easter week (April 1, 2010 - April 6, 2010). Traffic delays should be expected.
The project will remove, raise, and repave the road from approximately East and West Bias Lane to East and West Seahawk Drive in the Town of Duck. Additionally, storm water chambers will be installed along the shoulders of NC 12 in this area to hold and allow the infiltration of storm water to alleviate nuisance flooding.
Visitors should also note that the Duck Trail Multi-Use Path will be closed in the project area during this period.
