The Outer Banks Second Season

Easterns Surf Association Amateur surf competition at Jennette's Pier, September 20-26.

We’re in the last week of summer 2015 and it’s been a marvelous summer-great weather, lots of family coming to the Outer Banks to enjoy a week or two of vacation. But the end of the summer is not the end of reasons to come to visit the Outer Banks.

Here at Joe Lamb Jr., & Associates we’ve seen the fall become a new tradition, a time of special events and wonderful new reasons to spend a week or a long weekend.

There’s some great competitions coming up in September with the ESA Eastern Surfing Competition at Jennette’s Pier and Hatteras Wave Jam (Wind Surfing) in Hatteras Village the week of September 20th.

If there is one thing that seems to define the Outer Banks entertainment scene in the Fall, it’s great and amazing music festivals, starting with he 4th Annual Outer Banks Bluegrass Festival at Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo the last weekend in September. Rhonda Vincent and the Rage will be back for the fourth year, joining headliners Sam Bush and Pam Tillis.

Columbus Day Weekend has become a tradition for music lovers with the, 5th Annual Mustang Music Festival followed by the 8th annual Duck Jazz Festival. The Mustang Music Festival runs Friday and Saturday, leaving Sunday open for the Duck Jazz Festival.

The setting for Mustang Music is the Whalehead Club and it is a perfect venue for an outdoor concert. Back this year, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band with their funky New Orleans sound.

The Duck Town Green,is a beautiful setting that loans itself perfectly to the intimacy of jazz. The Duck Jazz Festival has become one of the highlights of the fall music scene and with Maceo Parker headlining this year, it just keeps getting better and better.

An important part of the local fishing heritage, commercial fishermen have always been a part of the community and the Outer Banks Seafood Festival (October 17) at celebrates that heritage. Lots of music, cooking demonstrations and some really well-prepared offerings made from fresh (very fresh) seafood.

The Outer Banks Marathon has become a family tradition. A fun event with lots to do all weekend, the races includes a family fun run, 5K and 10K courses as well as a half marathon. The marathon is a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon.
