N.E.S.T. is an acronym for: "The Network for Endangered Sea Turtles", which is a non-profit organization devoted to the conservation and protection of Sea Turtle and other marine animals on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Volunteers respond to stranded animals and nesting sites from the Virgina/North Carolina border, in the 4-wheel drive only area of Carova, to Oregon Inlet.
Conceived over 20 years ago, NEST is also a State-permitted monitoring organization for sea turtle activity. Volunteers are welcome and much needed for many tasks that include rehab for turtles, driving a N.E.S.T. 4-wheeler to watch over the turtles, responding to turtles in distress, and act as a sentry to watch over turtle nests that are about to hatch. There is a new turtle rehab facilty at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island.
