Forty-five years ago the Outer Banks was a very different place—just a one-lane highway and an open expanse of beach as far as the eye could see. Back then, an Outer Banks vacation was a time for bare feet, sandy towels, tan lines and making treasured memories with family and friends.
Joe Lamb, Jr. and his wife Ann fell in love with the Outer Banks nearly half a century ago. Having vacationed at his family’s cottage on the beach since he was a boy, Joe was a believer in the draw and the beauty of the Outer Banks. He and Ann moved to the beach from Elizabeth City in 1968 to make a go of it in real estate. Says Joe, “I believed that once people came and experienced the Outer Banks, they’d want to come back.”
With that philosophy in mind, Joe set up vacation rental business on the Beach Road in Nags Head with just himself and Ann on the payroll. Back then many of his homes didn’t have televisions or phones and all reservations were taken by hand. But still, people wanted to come to the beach and Joe’s business thrived.
Fast forward forty five years, and Joe Lamb, Jr. & Associates has grown to have 30 employees, over 550 vacation rental homes and a beautiful new office in Kitty Hawk. Always forward thinking, Joe Lamb, Jr. & Associates maintains a strong online and social media presence with over 5,500 Facebook fans and hundreds of Twitter followers.
At the core, for Joe Lamb, Jr. & Associates nothing much has changed. Forty five years have come and gone, and it’s still our goal to give you and your family the best Outer Banks vacation possible.
Today many of our guests are familiar faces from the past, children who have vacationed with us for years and are now adults. Just as it was back then, an Outer Banks vacation is still a time for bare feet, sandy towels, tan lines and making treasured memories with family and friends. Who is Joe Lamb Jr. and how did we begin?
Joe Lamb Jr. spent his summers vacationing on the Outer Banks when things were just a tad bit different than they are today. Joe recalls his summers here as a child, "There were many times I would sit on the front porch and never see or hear a car. There was one road, what is now the beach road. Everyone knew each other." Even then he recognized something special about the Outer Banks and knew that once people visited here they would want to come back year after year. Ann, too, spent her summers here as a child and recalls the home they had in Nags Head; "My family had a home in Nags Head, we spent many wonderful summers in that home. It is long gone now, but Joe had a coffee table made from that front door, we still use it today" said Ann. In March of 1968, the couple decided they were going to start a vacation rental and real estate sales business on the Outer Banks. They moved their family from Elizabeth City and worked hard to build their business. They started out with two employees, themselves.
Now Joe Lamb Jr & Associates is a global company that receives vacation inquires from people all over the world! We have provided accommodations to tens of thousands of families and have also helped to make ownership of a property here on the Outer Banks a reality for thousands. "People like to do business with us because we have a solid reputation and we have been here a long time, 45 years, and that makes people comfortable. I'm proud to be a part of something that brings people to this special place, knowing they are together as a family, and their vacation is something they can remember long after they leave," says Joe.
