Dare A250: Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary in Dare County

Celebrate Dare A250 — America’s 250th in the Land of Beginnings

In 2026, Dare County will proudly join communities across the nation to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Known as the Land of Beginnings, Dare County has played an outsized role in the American story — from early English exploration and settlement attempts to the first powered flight and lifesaving efforts along the Outer Banks. The Dare A250 initiative highlights these stories and invites residents and visitors to explore the people, places, and heritage that helped shape the United States.

The celebration is anchored by a series of events, historic site visits, and educational opportunities throughout the year, with the Dare A250 Passport Program offering a fun, self-guided way to discover key locations across the county

The Story Behind "Land of Beginnings"
Dare County’s designation as the Land of Beginnings reflects its deep connections to key moments in early American history. These include early English voyages and settlement attempts on Roanoke Island, the first powered flight at Kill Devil Hills, and the long tradition of lifesaving stations along the treacherous Outer Banks coast. The A250 celebration honors these milestones and invites visitors to explore how local stories contributed to national history.
