Outer Banks Pet Friendly Information

Joe Lamb Jr. & Associates has a very nice selection of Outer Banks pet-friendly rentals for you to choose from. It is important to remember that the homeowners who allow dogs in their OBX rentals are doing so for your convenience and most are dog lovers themselves. Please treat your pet-friendly home rental with respect and be sure to not leave your pet unattended for a long period of time. You are expected to clean up all hair, food, water, and waste prior to your departure. Have a great time and enjoy the dog-friendly beaches and pet-friendly parks here on the Outer Banks.

Each town has leash laws and different times that dogs are allowed ...

SEE WHICH TOWN IS RIGHT FOR YOU!

Duck - Dogs are allowed on the beach and they can be unleashed, but as a matter of public safety and courtesy, they should be under the watchful eye and control of the owner. In the town park and public areas dogs must be leashed.

Southern Shores - Between May 15 and September 15 of each year, no dogs shall be permitted on the public beach between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. unless being used to aid a handicapped person. *At all other times, dogs are not permitted on the public beaches except if they are on a leash and they are under the control of owner or handler.

During the day, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. they have to be on a leash that is no longer than 6 feet. Any time other than the Friday before Memorial Day until the day after Labor Day dogs can be off of their leash as long as they are within 30 feet of the owner/handler and not disturbing other beach goers. The owner/handler must have a leash with them. The leash can be a retractable one that goes out to 12 feet. Violation of any of these rules shall be a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not more than $50.00.

Please follow these guidelines when bringing your dog to the beach:

• Please pick up & dispose of pet waste in a trash can.

• Don't leave your dog in your vacation home for extended periods of time.
• Please do not bury pet waste in the sand or throw it in the ocean.
• Pick up lawn areas around your vacation home.
• Do not leave your pet in your car or tie them up to your car at any time.
• Remember to provide shade and plenty of water while at the beach.
• Be Aware ! Sand, asphalt, and concrete are very hot on dog's paws during the summer.
• Make sure your dog has a current Rabies Tag on its collar.

There are guidelines for being allowed to bring your pet into a privately owned vacation home. Not all homes allow dogs and some dog breeds are not allowed. When you rent you agree to the terms of the Vacation Rental Agreement.

Paragraph 16 states: Unless otherwise advertised, pets are strictly forbidden on or about the property whether on a temporary basis or otherwise and whether belonging to the Tenant or anybody else. Tenant shall be subject to a penalty of $500.00 plus tax upon Owner or Agent's demand for any violation of this pet prohibition. Further, Tenants bringing pets to homes that do not allow them will have committed a material breach and be subject to refusal of occupancy, termination of this agreement, and eviction without refund. Nevertheless, no guarantee is made that a rental property has been free of pets or service animals prior to Tenant's occupancy and no refunds can be given if it is discovered that pets or service animals have formerly occupied the property. For those properties advertised as allowing a dog, only one (1) mature, housebroken dog will be permitted unless prior approval is granted. Any Breed with a previously displayed vicious propensity is never allowed. Cats and other animals are never allowed. Tenant must clean property of all pet excretions immediately upon discovery and vacuum home to remove pet hair from all areas, including floors and furniture, prior to your departure. If you bring a dog(s) to a home in which they are allowed a non-refundable fee of $150.00 plus taxes, per dog, is charged for cleaning and flea extermination. If after paying the fee(s) you decide not to bring your dog(s), you must notify our office on or before the day of check-in in order to get a refund. Tenant shall not leave any dog unattended at property unless in a crate or pen. Tenants must abide by all applicable municipal pet ordinances and no representations are made by Owner or Agent concerning them
