The Outer Banks at Christmas

Like any place, the Outer Banks has itâåÛåªs share of Christmas traditions. WeâåÛåªve already talked about one of two of them--the Manteo Tree Lighting and the Winter Lights at the Elizabethan Gardens--and thereâåÛåªs a few more weâåÛåªll probably touch on, but there is one in particular that deserves special notice.

For more than 40 years now, the Poulos family has been creating a Holiday wonderland back on Ocean Acres Drive in Kill Devil Hills. ItâåÛåªs a little bit difficult to find if youâåÛåªre not from the Outer Banks, but itâåÛåªs worth the effort. Filling the night with thousands of decorations, lights, music and Santa Claus, the Poulos property becomes a place of joy.

To get there, turn at the light at PigmanâåÛåªs Barbecue and stay on Ocean Acres as it bends to the right, turns into a dirt road and goes up a hill. YouâåÛåªll know youâåÛåªre close when you see cars parked along the side of the road. Find a place to park and walk the rest of the way. ItâåÛåªs worth it.

There is a collection jar by the Santa hut. Put a dollar or two in . . . itâåÛåªs for the electric bill which the Poulos family takes on themselves.
